2016 is now over, and as we took a look back at the year that was, we named our picks for last year’s best anime. Many of our picks like Re:Zero, ERASED, and Yuri on Ice received much love from fans, however, 2016 was also a series full of underrated gems or anime which didn’t get as much attention.
We picked eight anime that we felt went under the radar of many anime fans and didn’t get the love that they so necessarily deserved. These are all TV anime, and we did not include any movies or OVA in our list. Unlike our best anime list, we did not rank them. here are our picks:
Sekkou Boys
Who knew that an anime about four classical statues getting turned into idols would be so hilarious? True, the anime’s episodes are rather short, however, the series is genuinely funny. Too bad fans didn’t pay much attention to it though.
Aokana: Four Rhythm Across the Blue
The anime about a fictional sport known as “Flying Circus” was actually pretty fun to watch, and we couldn’t help but feel that it didn’t get the attention it deserved. The anime featured excellent animation and beautiful action sequences, as well as a few lovable characters.
Space Patrol Luluco
Space Patrol Luluco is an anime by the same studio behind Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia, and features genuinely funny comedic scenes, several familiar Studio Trigger characters and references, and the 4th wall being utterly destroyed, and it surprised us that the series didn’t get much attention as it deserved as well. The anime itself is pretty ridiculous, and if you loved how ridiculous Kill la Kill or Time Cop was, you might find yourself enjoying Luluco as well.
Sansha Sanyou
Sansha Sanyou is a slice of life anime about three friends who have nothing in common with each other. One is a former rich girl who likes keeping the illusion that she’s still rich despite being poor as hell, one looks kind and gentle at first but actually has a black heart and is quite sadistic, and the other is hyperactive and has a black hole for a stomach, and the interactions between the three of them, as well as their friends make for a great show, that is also quite funny.
Alderamin on the Sky
This war anime featured a brilliant-but-lazy tactical genius, a master swordswoman, plenty of great action, some great tactical maneuvers which can glue you the the edge of your seats, and it also has a loli princess. Nuf said.
This Art Club Has a Problem
Much like our other picks, this one is a hilarious comedy anime which we felt went under the radar of many anime fans. The anime follows an art club full of odd people and mainly focuses on five characters who could tickle your funny bone.
The Great Passage
The Great Passage is about an editorial team who are trying to publish a dictionary. Sure, when you hear about its premise, you would first think that it’s going to be boring. However, it is anything but boring, and the series has proven to be one of this year’s biggest gems, completely under the radar of many anime fans. If you are searching for a great story, this one may be for you.
Lostorage Incited WIXOSS
The WIXOSS franchise took a darker look for the card game genre. Like the Selector series, Lostorage Incited WIXOSS got pretty dark, diving deep into the realm of memories with people having to gamble for them in order to win. The original anime was considered the Madoka Magica of the card game genre, however, much like the original, Lostorage Incited WIXOSS too flew under the radar of many fans.
So what do you think of our picks? What do you think is the most underrated anime of 2016?
