Makoto Shinkai’s your name. is now officially the highest grossing Japanese animated film of all time in terms of global box office sales. The multi-award-winning anime movie may have gotten the Oscar snub, but the film did manage to surpass Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s Oscar-winning classic, Spirited Away.
The film has received both praise and criticism from critics all over the world, but what do the people from Studio Ghibli think of the film? Studio Ghibli co-founder and former producer Toshio Suzuki recently gave an interview with Weekly Bunshun magazine, and he finally gave his thoughts, along with the thoughts of the man Makoto Shinkai has been compared to, Hayao Miyazaki, about your name.
The producer first talked about the “a girl losing her way in a different world” trope and said, “I had a prediction that someone would make that sometime.” He also revealed that Miyazaki agreed with him, and said that the Oscar-winning director told him “Yeah, that’s right. I won’t do it, but [the film] goes just like I thought.”
He also talked about Shinkai himself, and said that “The term ‘another world’ is used successfully time and again, and I had a hunch that Makoto Shinkai is a fan of Hayao Miyazaki.” The Ghibli co-founder also praised your name. a lot, saying “It’s made so that all the characters in the drama, lines, and music make the background stand out.” He also added “The high fall sky that seems like it could be breathed in was especially impressive”.
There you have it folks, apparently, the people at Ghibli thought your name. was great… unlike a few Japanese critics out there.
