Kumamon, the Kumamoto prefecture"s official mascot, visits location shoot for "Rurouni Kenshin"

Rurouni Kenshin is most certainly one of Weekly Shounen Jump!‘s most beloved manga of all time and its live-action movie adaptation is just as entertaining and successful, boasting over 3 billion yen worth of ticket sales when it was released in Japan last year.

With its second and third movies coming up in succession next year, respectively titled Rurouni Kenshin Kyoto Taika hen and Rurouni Kenshin Densetsu no Saigo hen, filming is going smoothly with director Keishi Ohtomo at the helm.

The cast and crew have been filming in three locations in Kumamoto prefecture since early August, and they are the Manda mine in Arao, the House of Law in Uki and the Yachiyo seat in Yamaga. All three of these locations are considered cultural heritages on both the prefectural and national levels.

While filming, the cast and crew was visited by a very special guest: the mascot of Kumamoto prefecture himself, Kumamon. The mascot took pictures with the main cast, Takeru Sato (Kenshin Himura),Emi Takei (Kaoru Kamiya), Aoki Munetaka (Sanusuke Segara) and Kaito Oyago (Yahiko Myojin). He also presented them with some of Kumamoto prefecture’s finest products like watermelons, pears and grapes.

Kumamon was created in 2010 by the Kumamoto prefectural government as a mascot to draw in tourists when the Kyushu Shinkansen line opened. He then gained national attention when he won a national vote against other mascots in a Yuru-Chara event in 2011.
