Along the MacArthur Highway in Calumpit, Bulacan in the Philippine island of Luzon, a certain resort called Jed’s Island has caused a stir among Gundam fans as the resort featured the franchise’s most famous and iconic mobile suit, the original RX-78-2 Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam (1979).
Measuring in at 64 feet, or 21 meters in height, this gigantic mobile suit is a little bit taller than its original counterpart which has an 18 meter 1:1 scale replica standing guard in Odaiba, Tokyo. At 21 meters, this RX-78-2 is almost as tall as its bigger and more modern “descendant”, the Nu Gundam, which is piloted by RX-78-2’s pilot, Amuro Ray.
Though taller, the Jed’s Island Gundam is a bit on the slimmer side than the original, and it has clearly irked some Gundam fans. However, some more die-hard fans have argued that this Gundam statue is a bit of a parody of the original series, which is still quite infamous for its poor animation quality as compared to today’s standards.
The statue even inspired a few memes in the Philippines’ own GunPla community.
The resort however did not only feature the iconic Gundam, but a few classic anime mechas as well, including Mazinger Z and Voltes V. Even Bumblebee from Transformers is present.
