Japanese media website, Buzz+ News, is continuing their celebrations of the 35th anniversary of Gundam with another ranking, this time focusing on the unforgettable theme songs which have been featured in the franchise.
Buzz+ News previously made two very controversial rankings on the “Strongest Gundams” and the “Weakest Gundams”. Their decision on the Top 10 Gundam theme songs are based on “how powerful” the song is in terms of how it best represented its series. Also, please take note that these songs are taken from Gundam ANIME, so theme songs from the countless Gundam video games do not count. Here are their picks:
10) Hyphen Staccato (The toilet song) by Daisuke Hasegawa (Gundam Reconguista in G insert song)
9) Toki wo Koete by Mami Ayukawa (Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta OP)
8) Century Color by RAY GUNS (Turn A Gundam OP)
7) Eternal Wind ~ Hohoemi wa Hikaru Kaze no Naka by Hiroko Moriguchi (Gundam F-91 ED)
6) Wings of Words by Chemistry (Gundam SEED Destiny OP)
5) Kagiri Naki Tabiji by Aki Okui (Turn A Gundam ED)
4) Trust You Forever by Yuri Amano (Mobile Fighter G Gundam OP)
3) Mizu no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete by Hiroko Moriguchi (Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta OP)
2) Tsuki no Mayu by Yoko Kanno (Turn A Gundam ED)
1) Turn A Turn by Hideki Saijo (Turn A Gundam OP)
Wow, Buzz+ News seems to like the soundtrack of Turn A Gundam a lot as Yoshiyuki Tomino’s critically-acclaimed series taken four spots in their Top 10, with the Top 2 being occupied by the anime’s 1st OP and 2nd ED respectively.
Gundam Zeta also fared very well in the rankings with two entries, both of which are OP songs. It seems that a few favorites, including Gundam ZZ’s award-winning OP song, “This is not Anime, this is Real Life”, as well as a few of the great songs from Gundam 00, 08th MS Team, Stardust Memory, Gundam X, and others, were not even considered for the top 10, but none the less, the rankings featured a good balance of OP and ED songs, with only one insert song… which is unfortunately, the “Toilet Song” from G-Reco.
What do you think of their picks? Meanwhile, here’s all of the Gundam OPs compiled from the original 1979 anime all the way to Gundam AGE. This video was compiled back in 2013 so unfortunately, there are still no OPs for Build Fighters, Build Fighters Try, and G-Reco.
