MyNavi Student: These are the Top 10 anime characters who were strong at first but became weaker later

When a new arc starts in most action anime, we are often given a very strong villain who could beat up the hero without dropping a sweat, and then after the hero finally manages to beat him, he is shown in later arcs to be considerably weaker, with the hero wiping the floor with him instead. This is mostly to show the hero’s growth in strength and is very common in Shounen anime and manga.

The Japanese media website for students, MyNavi Student, has asked its readers to rank the anime characters who they think is really strong when introduced, but considerably weak as the series went on. The poll had 298 respondents, and here is what they had to say:

10) Jun Uozumi (Slam Dunk)

9) Warsman (Kinnikuman)

One series known for the main character leaving his supporting cast behind in strength is Dragon Ball and it is no surprise that the series took up half of the rankings with five entries, three of them in fact are in the Top 3. While the Top 3 are all infamous for being introduced as strong and powerful at first yet considerably weaker as the series moves on, nobody is as infamous as the #1 ranked Yamcha who has even inspired a meme and his name is often synonymous with weakness. True, at first he could beat up the young and inexperienced Goku (who was still a kid at that time by the way), however, as the series shifts to more powerful opponents, it is clear that he has been left behind, often getting killed in the process… but still not as much as Krillin and Goku himself though.

The same goes for Piccolo, who was actually the “Final Boss” of the Dragon Ball series. However, in Dragon Ball Z, you can find this former “Big Bad” getting his butt handed to him by the arc villain’s minions. Master Roshi, who trained Goku and Krillin, has shown great power, but as the series moves on, he is only shown as a perverted old man of legendary proportions.

The only non-Dragon Ball character in the Top 5 is the younger Toguro brother from Yu Yu Hakusho. He breaks the combo by beating out Frieza. While he met his demise at the end of his own arc, his overwhelming power seems to pale in comparison to later villains in the series, and that says a lot since Toguro is considered the anime’s most well-known villain.

Do you agree with the list?
