Just when you thought all the controversies surrounding the bizarre and strained relationship between legendary video game maker, Hideo Kojima, and pachinko company, Konami, some new developments have arisen from the Video Game Awards in Los Angeles, California last Thursday, as Hideo Kojima was reportedly barred from receiving the awards that he has won by a lawyer from… you guessed it, Konami! Here is the video from the awards ceremony as posted by IGN:
According to Geoff Keighley, host and producer of the Video Game Awards, Kojima, who is still in contract with Konami, was not allowed to travel from Tokyo to Los Angeles to receive his awards, even though he really really wants to. Here is what the host had to say about Kojima’s absence:
“As you noticed, Hideo Kojima is not here with us tonight and I want to tell you a little about that. Mr. Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight, but unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami just recently that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight’s awards ceremony to accept any awards. He’s still under an employment contract. And it’s disappointing and it’s inconceivable to me that an artist like Hideo would not be allowed to come here and celebrate with his peers and his fellow teammates.”
Fans booed the announcement that Kojima wasn’t attending, but they did cheer when Keighly said that everyone in attendance wanted to see him there. Actor Keifer Sutherland, who is part of the game’s English voice cast, accepted an award on his behalf.
Another award for Metal Gear Solid V, which was given in a different awards ceremony, this time during the PlayStation Awards in Tokyo, was also not received by Kojima, but was instead received by a PR representative from Konami.
