Re:Zero gets massively censored in China

Re:Zero is one of this year’s hottest and most popular anime, and it is currently being shown in many different countries around the world. Lately, the anime has gotten a little bit bloodier and more violent than usual, and it seems that the censors in China have noticed.

Photos from the Chinese anime-sharing site, Bilibili have shown how much of the content from the latest episode was censored, which some Japanese fans commenting that it was a lot “worse than Terra Formars (season 1).” This is because a few scenes from the episode have been completely blacked out because of all the blood and gore.

In the original Japanese release, several of the dead bodies were seen in the shadows, and one scene showed a pile of burnt bodies which are still smoking, however, some of the Chinese viewers have commented that there’s a little bit too much shadow and smoke for their version…

China has been very notorious in censoring and banning foreign titles, not just ones from Japan. In fact, China’s Ministry of Culture has banned several anime titles for “encouraging juvenile delinquency, glorify violence and include sexual content”. All material coming into the country are reviewed and evaluated by official investigators from the ministry, and they aim to guide websites in importing foreign comics and animation, so it’s no surprise that Re:Zero turned out like this.
