The Top 20 Most Popular Manga Authors of 2016, according to Charapedia

In Japan, manga authors and illustrators, or mangaka as they are called, are treated with much respect and reverence. Many of them even have a celebrity status, like One Piece’s Eiichiro Oda and Attack on Titan’s Hajime Isayama.

For this week’s Charapedia Poll, they asked readers to rank their favorites for 2016. The poll featured 10,000 fans responding, 39.4% of whom are male, while 60.6% are female. A total of 66 mangaka were included in the poll, but only the Top 20 were revealed:

1 – Hideaki Sorachi (Gintama)

Sorachiflowers

The ever-lovable mangaka of Gintama has been really involved in his work, and has even made a few appearances in the anime adaptation. Sorachi has been known to troll fans, and it really does seem that the fans love him for his antics, which is enough to land him the top spot in this Charapedia poll.

Meanwhile, perennial fan-favorite, Eiichiro Oda only managed to get 2nd place, while the eternally “youthful” Hirohiko Araki, who still looks the same 15 years ago, took 3rd. Hiromu Arakawa managed to become the only rose among the thorns in the Top 4, as she secured the #4 spot, with her Heroic Legend of Arslan currently airing its second anime. Rounding out the Top 5 is Sui Ishida, whose Tokyo Ghoul is receiving a live-action movie adaptation.
