The Antagonist, also known as the villain, has always been an essential part of any story, be it aliens, zombies, Nazis, or Alien Zombie Nazis. They provide a necessary spice for any story, and they would often give our heroes some very tough challenges. Let’s just say that there are also some villains that you just can’t hate!
For this week’s Charapedia poll, the Japanese anime database has asked 10,000 fans (36.6% male, 63.4% female) to vote for the anime or manga villain that they think is the most lovable. Of the 52 villains included in the poll, only the Top 20 were actually named, and they are:
20 – Tooru Oikawa (Haikyuu!!)
19 – Annie Leonhardt (Attack on Titan)
18 – Sousuke Aizen (Bleach)
17 – Deishuu Kaiki (Monogatari)
16 – Dio Brando (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure)
15 – Shuu Tsukiyama (Tokyo Ghoul)
14 – Itachi Uchiha (Naruto)
13 – Ferid Baathory (Seraph of the End)
12 – Vermouth (Detective Conan)
11 – Akihiko Kayaba (Sword Art Online)
10 – Izaya Orihara (Durarara!!)
9 – Frieza (Dragon Ball)
8 – Betelgeuse (Re:Zero)
7 – Kamui (Gintama)
6 – Buggy (One Piece)
5 – Makoto Hanamiya (Kuroko’s Basketball)
4 – Doronbo Gang (Yatterman)
3 – Shinsuke Takasugi (Gintama)
2 – Team Rocket (Pokemon)
1 – Baikinman (Anpanman)
While there were plenty of lovable villains in the list, the fans decided to go classic, and voted for Anpanman’s arch nemesis, Baikinman, whose determination has certainly won over some fans. This villain has certainly touched a lot of childhoods back in Japan, so it’s no wonder he took the #1 spot.
And speaking of determined baddies, Team Rocket blasts off to second place, while the ever-dangerous Shinsuke Takasugi makes his way to #3. Seems like fans love the bumbling villains a lot more, as the Doronbo Gang makes it to 4th place, beating the ever-calculating “dirty player,” Makoto Hanamiya, who took 5th.
