The mecha genre is full of overpowered robots. But sometimes, it’s not just the robot that makes it powerful, but the pilot as well. Without a good pilot, some robots would just be considered a piece of junk, and that is why they are often just as important as the robots themselves.
For this week’s Charapedia poll, they asked 10,000 anime fans to vote for the anime pilot who they think is the strongest. As expected, a lot of male fans weighed in, as 74.8% are guys, while only 25.2% were females. A total of 45 pilots were included in the poll, but only 45 were named, and as expected, one particular franchise dominated. The Top 20 are:

19 – Nagisa Kaworu (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
18 – Banagher Links (Gundam UC)
17 – Teru Ichijo (Super Dimension Fortress Macross)
16 – Athrun Zala (Gundam SEED)
15 – Mikazuki Augus (Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans)
14 – Shinji Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
13 -Inaho Kaizuka (Aldnoah.Zero)
12 – Chirico Cuvie (Votoms)
11 – Simon (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
10 – Suzaku Kururugi (Code Geass)
9 – Heero Yuy (Gundam Wing)
8 – Guy Shishioh (Gaogaigar)
7 – Char Aznable (Gundam)
6 – Domon Kasshu (G Gundam)

Gundam has proven to be Japan’s most prominent mecha series, and it has translated in this week’s Charapedia rankings, as the Top 7 are all pilots from the Gundam franchise, with Amuro Ray taking first place… to no one’s surprise. Meanwhile, Kira Yamato may be taking a break from the Newtype Rankings, but he has proven that he’s still going strong, and taking the #2 spot.
While the Gundam franchise has a total of 11 characters making it to the Top 20, Gaogaigar manages to secure the #8 position, beating out Heero Yuy to prevent an all-Gundam Top 8. Other mecha anime (that are not Gundam) also did well, such as Code Geass and Evangelion. Macross surprisingly did not fare well, as the franchise only had one entrant.
