The Top 20 Anime Characters with the Most Charming Accents according to Charapedia

Sometimes, the Japanese language or diakect we are most familiar with is the one spoken in the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo where most anime are set. However, Japan  has a host of different dialects, and they sound a little bit different from the usual “Japanese” language that we usually see.

In anime, we’ve seen plenty of different accents, from the Okinawa accent to the Kansai accent, to even the broken Japanese accent most “foreign” characters have. For this week’s poll, Charapedia has asked 10,000 fans, 52.5% male and 47.5% female, to rank which anime character has the most charming accent. Of the 40 characters featured in the list, only the Top 20 were named, and they are:

20 – Muromi (Muromi-san)

19 – Mako Someya (Saki)

18 – Arata Wataya (Chihayafuru)

17 – Megumi Tadokoro (Food Wars: Shokugeki no Souma)

16 – Hibiki Ganaha (The iDOLM@STER)

15 – Gin Ichimaru (BLEACH)

14 – Nana Ebina (Himouto Umaru-chan)

13 – Mitsuha Miyamizu (your name.)

12 – Naru Kotoishi (Barakamon)

11 – Yajirobe (Dragon Ball)

10 – Hayate Yagami (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)

9 – Hime Onizuka (Sket Dance)

8 -Niko-chan the Great (Dr. Slump)

7 – Ayumu Kasuga (Azumanga Daioh)

6 – Kerberos (Cardcaptor Sakura)

5 – Lum Invader (Urusei Yatsura)

4 – Hanamaru Kunikida (Love Live! Sunshine)

3 – Nozomi Tojo (Love Live!)

2 – Marika Tachibana (Nisekoi)

1 – Heiji Hattori (Detective Conan)

With his thick Osakan Kansai-ben accent, Heiji Hattori has managed to secure the top spot, over Marika Tachibana, who speaks with a Hakata accent. The difference may lie with the fact that Hattori ain’t shy about talking in his accent at all, while others like Marika would often try to hide their accents or dialects.

Another Kansai dialect speaker like Hattori ranks high in the list, and she’s none other than Nozomi Tojo. Though she is not originally from the Kansai region, she actually grew up there, and actually speaks the region’s dialect.

And yes, aliens to speak a bit of a broken sort of Japanese… ain’t that right Lum?
