Magical girls, or Mahou Shoujo as they are called in Japan, has now been a huge part of Japanese animation that they now have their own sub genre. According to Wikipedia, “Magical girls is a subgenre of Japanese fantasy anime and manga which feature girls who use magic.”
These girls are now the subject of this week’s Charapedia poll, and the Japanese anime character database has asked 10,000 anime fans (65.2% male, 34.8% female) about which magical girl is the one they find most attractive. Of the 35 entrants in the poll, only the Top 20 have been revealed, and they are:
20 – Yuu Morisawa (Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel)
19 – Hikaru Shidou (Magic Knight Rayearth)
18 – Riko Izayoi (Maho Girls PreCure)
17 – Miyuki Shiba (The Irregular at Magic High School)
16 – Punie Tanaka (Magical Witch Punie-chan)
15 – Kosaki Onodera (Magical Pattissier Kosaki-chan/ Nisekoi)
14 – Ami Mizuno/ Sailor Mercury (Sailor Moon)
13 – Lina Inverse (Slayers)
12 – Hayate Yagami (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)
11 – Kyouko Sakura (Madoka Magica)
10 – Usagi Tsukino / Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon)
9 – Sayaka Miki (Madoka Magica)
8 – Dorie Goodwyn (Ojamajo Doremi)
7 – Fate Testarossa (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)
6 – Mami Tomoe (Madoka Magica)
5 – Illyasviel Von Einzbern (Fate series)
4 – Nanoha Takamachi (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)
3 – Sakura Kinomoto (Cardcaptor Sakura)
2 – Homura Akemi (Madoka Magica)
1 – Madoka Kaname (Madoka Magica)
It’s not really surprising that Madoka Magica would dominate these rankings, with all five main magical girls being featured in the Top 20, however, what is surprising is the #1, as Homura is often seen as the one with more fans that the main protagonist herself. This is not really what you would call an upset as both are REALLY popular, but Homura getting beat out by Madoka is a little bit unexpected.
Other series which did well are Cardcaptor Sakura, with the titular character taking #3, Lyrical Nanoha, with Hayate, Nanoha, and Fate all getting into the Top 20, Ojamajo Doremi’s Dorie Goodwyn managing to pull off huge upsets opver Sayaka, Sailor Moon, Kyouko Sakura, and many more.
