Sometimes, when an anime comes into a season with a lot of hype and a lot of anticipation, the scrutiny and expectations it gets when the premiere episode airs is also high. Most of the time, they just crash and burn behind the burden of high expectations, however, sometimes, they meet those expectations and leave audiences satisfied, and Sailor Moon Crystal is one of them.
Sailor Moon Crystal came into the new Summer 2014 season with so much hype that it rivaled Sword Art Online II with all the worldwide publicity. It was even streamed live all around the world when it premiered, and in 12 different languages too!
But how did it fair when it premiered? Pretty well actually as its viewers in Japanese streaming website Nico Nico Douga have submitted their ratings after the anime was shown online.
50.1% of the viewers rated the anime’s first episode as Very Good while 31.0% rated it as Good. 9.1% meanwhile said the episode was so-so and was neither good nor bad, while 7.9% said it was bad. Only 4.3% thought the episode was horrible.
Looks like the Sailor Moon Crystal hype train has shown no slowing down even after its highly anticipated premiere. I had the privilege of watching the new anime premiere myself and I can say that it was one huge nostalgia trip. I’ve watched the original series as a kid and as the episode was shown, I could not help but let the fanboy in me let loose a bit. The episode certainly hits long-time fans right in the childhood and its art style, which is much closer to the manga, has made some die hard fans actually squeal.
When Usagi was introduced, you can really ask yourself whether this girl could really save the world as she is clumsy, forgetful, and a downright clutz but they presented her in a way that she is lovable though a tad bit annoying at times, but then again, this is the very character fans (including yours truly) fell in love with in the first place.
And you can also imagine the amount of fan girl squealing once THIS GUY, Tuxedo Mask AKA Mamoru was introduced.
All in all, the anime truly lived up to its hype and hopefully, it does not disappoint as this is only episode one and we still have a long way to go.
Viewing the series via Niconico Douga will be free for the first two weeks, but after that, it will become pay-per-view. It premiered yesterday, July 5, 2014.
